BEFORE: We faced with a daunting project. My husband’s family home had been neglected inside and out for more than a decade. It was empty and needed to be prepare for sale. The property is a 1958 raised bungalow, situated in northeast Toronto. Ancient Willows had taken over the backyard and large branches and cracked off and fallen to the ground. Front and back lawns had become fields of four-foot high grass. The front split rail fence that my Father-in-Law had erected three or four decades ago was disintegrating and was held together with coat hanger wire. The posts were still strong though and we wondered if we could save them as a tribute. Another mesh fence had been cut through and peeled back, then reinforced with a variety of materials from wire to rebar to everything in between.. The granite retaining wall along the sides of the driveway had become dangerous and giant rocks would tumble down after a rain or during winter. And the front stairs and interlocking stones along the front the house had become perilous with rotted wood, sunken stones and a rickety handrail made with a 2 X 4. The three car decades old asphalt driveway was just plain ugly and had a number of deep cracks where weeds grew happily. And these are just some of the things that we had to deal with. Overwhelmed, we didn’t know where to begin!
AFTER: Enter the University Brothers. Three real brothers named Umberto, Gianmarco and Stefano. Gianmarco came to evaluate the situation in the fall of 2019. He sent us an estimate within a week and we agreed to start the project on a specific date in the spring of 2020. University Brothers communicated with us on a regular over the winter months. The project started as planned. On site, they broke down the tasks into a practical order of operations. They cleared the property to regain definition of existing plants, trees and shrubs. They designed, built, painted and landscaped. And to our delight, they were able to save my Father-in-Law’s fence posts and erect new wood planks, breathing new life into the original creation. They were always on time and they worked diligently during very hot weather. They listened well, understood instruction and collaborated with each other and with us. The University Brothers did an excellent job building us a raised two tier deck, staircase, and flower beds for the outside space of our home in York Mills. They had a tough space to work with and their focus on safety, structural integrity and a happy customer was evident throughout the process. Everything was completed with care, with a smile, and with excellent customer service. All at reasonable rates. We would not hesitate to use them again or recommend to our friends and family.

Working with Umberto and the University Brothers was a breeze and a pleasure. Their attention to detail in ensuring that our new home was painted to our exact specifications was unparalleled. Umberto made it a point to ensure that all of our questions were answered and that we felt comfortable with our paint colour decisions. Umberto was also very responsive in a very quick manner – this was super helpful as this was our first home and so we were understandably nervous. The University Brothers put us at ease and when the job was complete, they weren’t satisfied until we were satisfied.

We enlisted the University Brothers to paint most of the inside of our house. From start to finish, they were professional, efficient and friendly. They had a crew of 4 people each day and it took them about a week and a half. They were able to do any necessary drywall repairs and did a great job of painting the walls, some ceilings and the trim. They checked in if they had questions and tided up very well. Their rates are reasonable and I would absolutely use them again. I highly recommend the University Brothers!
